Sharing points of view

Mountain regions have long been a meeting place. A meeting place between the wild and the domesticated, between transhumant herds and local farms, between tourism development and nature conservation.

Without trying to determine who has the most legitimacy, we will meet with several stakeholders who will tell us about their work, their needs, and the threats facing their activities.

We will try to understand how several conflicting activities can coexist in a limited area and the friction that this sharing of space can generate.

This outing will take place in two parts: first, a time for discussion and interaction, and second, a debriefing through improvisational theater and role-playing.

The aim of this outing is to foster empathy, a desire for discovery, and critical thinking. It also places students in the context of climate change and the adaptation of economic and agricultural activity to the disruptions that could result.

Rencontres

Depending on the time of year and the topics the class wishes to explore, I will propose a panel of socio-economic stakeholders who will talk about their profession or passion. They will discuss the space and resource needs related to their activities, as well as the constraints and threats they face.

We will visit them directly in the field during a short hike, either a full day or half a day.

At the end of the outing, a landscape analysis will allow us to contextualize these interventions within their environmental constraints and to compare the different layers of land use in the mountain environment.

Feedback Sessions

In a second phase, either in the afternoon or on a second day, we will offer students the opportunity to participate in a debate.

Each student will be able to play the role of one of the stakeholders they met or one of their supporters, allowing them to put themselves in their shoes and understand the constraints related to their profession.

Students will present their arguments during a role-playing exercise simulating a municipal commission. Focusing on a divisive issue, the different parties will be able to support or oppose the proposed project. They will also have to learn to work together and compromise so that the project moves forward and is best suited to the mountain community.

Preparation

To make the outing as engaging as possible, it is strongly recommended that the children be prepared for this activity. Encourage them to think about the different stakeholders who will be speaking and to imagine their constraints so that they can prepare their own questions to ask during the meeting. For the presentation, notes and the landscape reading sketch will be valuable resources.
