Hike Description

The spotted nutcracker is an uncommon mountain bird, except in certain forests, such as the Arolla pine forest of Chamrousse.

The Arolla pine (Pinus cembra) and the nutcracker have coexisted for thousands of years; one cannot exist without the other. This symbiosis between animal and plant has shaped the landscape and endowed this corvid with astonishing abilities.
During this half-day hike, we will follow the clues left by the bird to learn about its way of life and discover this remarkable tree, the Arolla pine.

The arolla pine forest of Chamrousse, the westernmost in the Alps, is unique in the Grenoble region. It is partly responsible for the site's Natura 2000 designation. Humans have long sought to exploit the arolla pine for the many qualities of its wood and seeds.

The nutcracker is a mysterious bird; scientists continue to wonder about its memory abilities. It serves as a guiding thread, helping us better understand natural selection, evolution, ecological niches, and more.

During the walk, we will also discuss the other animals with which the nutcracker shares its habitat and try to decipher the signs of their presence: squirrels, mountain hares, black grouse, woodpeckers, and others.
